Two JiHM staff members and a student reflect on the April 2023 massacre in their village
During the late morning of Wednesday, April 19, 2023, more than 100 armed men brutally attacked the peaceful village of Source Matelas, where JiHM had served for nearly 20 years.
Less than half a mile from the worst of the gunfire, JiHM’s property—home to Victory Bible Church and Grace Emmanuel School—was filled with nearly 400 people of all ages when the attack began. Thanks to courageous leadership and God’s protection, the campus was evacuated safely.
But family members and friends, homes and possessions, hearts and an entire way of life were left behind in Source Matelas that day—lost in the blink of an eye.
Three years later, gangs remain in the village. There has been no justice. Some families have slowly returned, forced by economic desperation to live in the shadow of violence. The vast majority remain displaced. JiHM’s property still stands abandoned.
This month, we remember that day through the voices of three people who lived it. We lament their losses. And we praise God for His continued faithfulness in their lives.
