The 2015-2016 school year has quickly come to a close at Grace Emmanuel School. While the rest of the school was studying and taking exams during the last two weeks of June, the third kindergarteners prepared for their graduation day—the big event that officially marks the end of the school year in Haiti.

We arrive at the dentist’s office, a pristine establishment comparable to a practice you would find in the States. The walls and floors are white, and just inside the door sits the front desk and five small, wicker chairs arranged in one corner.

It’s an ordinary weekday afternoon at the Lighthouse, and Stephanie and Odette are preparing rice for when the kids return from school. I pull up a chair next to Stephanie as she grates coconut into a large metal bowl.

There are two 8th graders at Grace Emmanuel School you will always find together: Gefftia and Joffanie. They both are new this year, and have many things in common, including similar names that I can never seem to get right. They are only eight months apart in age (Joffanie is 14 and Gefftia will turn 14 next month), both want to be nurses, and both love Jesus.
