Fresh start, faithful God

On October 6, Grace Emmanuel School opened its doors for its 22nd year. Though Haiti continues its heartbreaking descent into further chaos, the sound of laughter, lessons, and singing fills the air at the school—a stark contrast to the headlines and a reminder of God’s sustaining hand over this ministry.

A new year and a new location

Last Monday, students arrived early, dressed in crisp uniforms or fancy dresses, ready to begin a new chapter at another new location just up the road from the previous location.

Deep gratitude and simple joys

The first day of school carried a mix of relief and gratitude as students stepped into a new year and reunited with their friends and teachers.

“I’m happy because I’m entering a new grade level and a new school location,” said Bianca, a sixth grader. “I thank God for His protection because nothing bad happened to me over the summer.” She said the best part of her day was being reunited with her friends.

For 3rd grader Guedalia, the new location came with something extra exciting—swings. “I’m happy because we are at a new school and there are swings for the kids!” she said.

And for 8th grader Fetchina, sitting safely in her classroom on that first day was no small gift. Like so many other students, her summer had been marked by fear as gangs attacked her neighborhood again in September. “God protected me from all evil again,” she said. “He saved my life.”

The teachers, too, expressed similar sentiments as they welcomed students back.

“I feel good about starting school because I missed the kids a lot,” said Brunia, who teaches kindergarten. “It’s a grace God gives us that the school continues to open after all the great difficulties we’ve encountered.” Her prayer this year is for “stability for the kids to learn better every day.”

First grade teacher Erline also described the start of school as a blessing, despite the challenges she faces. “I feel happy despite the fatigue work brings because I live a great distance away,” she said. “It’s a joy to see the kids returning despite the situation of the country—school is the only hope for Haiti’s future.”

Resting in God’s faithfulness

These ordinary moments bring comfort, but the greatest peace comes from knowing that the Lord remains faithful and His presence drives out fear. “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty,” reads Psalm 91—a verse Brunia says gives her great encouragement as she begins another year of teaching.

Though the school still stands in the shadow of gang violence, the campus itself is alive with the familiar rhythms of learning—morning flag-raising and devotions, children laughing at recess, and teachers guiding students through reading, math, science, and languages.

Erline also testifies to God’s faithfulness and looks forward to reminding her students of it throughout the year. “He’s always here,” she said simply.

Please continue to pray for God’s protection over Grace Emmanuel School this year.
